Beginner's Guide Before Checkers are Moved

Does backgammon interests you? Are you dying to learn to play the game? Well, you've come upon the right article.

Backgammon is an old board game of checkers and dice played long ago by the Greeks and Roman. But even before they started playing backgammon, other ancient civilizations such as those found in Egypt and Mesopotamia were also into such kind of game. In all those times, it wasn't called backgammon yet. It had different names but the game structure was similar to the modern backgammon game we know today.

Again, backgammon is a board game played with checkers and dice. You are to move these checkers home with movements depending on the roll of the dice. Your goal is to beat the other player in moving all your checkers to your home board. To start playing backgammon, you should have all the needed equipment first: the board, checkers, dice and doubling cube. If you do not like rolling the dice with your bare hands, you can purchase a dice shaker or dice cap to do the rolling.

It is a game played by two players so the next thing you need to do after making ready all those backgammon game supplies is to look for an opponent. Backgammon cannot be played with one player unless you decide to play the other player's part. Then you arrange the checkers on the board accordingly. Remember that the checker arrangement is a mirror image of each other.

Looking at the game board, you will notice a raised portion in the center. That is called the bar. And the board surface to the right and left of the bar is called the inner and outer board interchangeably. On the board surface you will notice long triangles of alternating colors. These triangles are referred to as points. These triangles are numbered 1 to 24.

The turns are decided by rolling a die. Whoever gets the higher number starts first. In the proceeding game, the winner of the previous game starts first.

After the very first roll of die, two dice are used to decide the move of the checkers. There used to be an old rule that the very first roll of the first player will be the number of moves he can use to move his or her checkers while the second player will disregard the very first roll result and roll two dice this time to determine the number of moves he or she is allowed. It could be that after knowing who goes first, both players will roll the dice again to know their moves and the old rule is not applied.
