High Number Non-Double Reply to the Opening Roll

The backgammon player who gets to reply to the opening rolls have more dice rolls to remember and even more recommended plays to keep in mind. That may be the case, every player is indeed required to memorize each of the dice combinations and every recommended play if mastery of the game is to be attained. It will indeed take time and patience (and a lot of games played) before any backgammon player masters every single one of them.

Here are our recommended replies to the opening roll for the non-double dice combinations. The combinations we'll look at involve at least one high result on the dice. We'll give out the best reply if ever there is more than one recommended move for a particular combination.

Our first dice roll combination is a Five-Two. Our recommended reply for the opening roll given this combination is to do 24/22 13/8. An alternative option is to do 13/11 13/8 (bringing down a couple of builders from the bar-point).

The next opening roll reply is for the Five-Three dice roll combination. The recommended move for this dice roll result is to do a 8/3 6/3 since it makes a home board point. Comparing this to the previous favorite 13/10 13/8, making the three-point on your home board has more advantages.

Our next dice roll combination is a Five-Four. We have a couple of recommended opening roll replies for this combination. The first is to do a split play by 24/20 13/8, which is a balanced play. The second recommended reply is to do a build play with 13/9 13/8.

A Six-One dice roll combination would be next in our list. The only decent reply to the opening roll with this combination is to do 13/7 8/7 making your bar-point. Any other reply would just be inferior in the backgammon opening.

The next dice roll combination is a Six-Two. We have three recommended replies to the opening roll given this combination. First recommended reply is to do 24/18 13/11, which is the best, second is to do 24/16 (running play), and third would be a 13/5 play (slotting the five-point).

A Six-Three combination is our next item for consideration. The two recommended backgammon plays are 24/18 13/10 (split play) and a running play via 24/15 (second favorite).

We have three recommended backgammon opening roll replies for a Six-Four combination. These are 24/14 (running play), 24/18 13/9 (split play), and 8/2 6/2 (home board point). These three stand almost equal to each other.

Doing a 24/13 is the recommended reply for a combination of Six-Five.

These are our recommended replies to the opening rolls. Knowing the correct backgammon plays make the rest of the game a little easier.
